What to Expect from Hearing Aids

Appropriate expectations of hearing aid benefit is critical to proper adjustment.  Unlike glasses, hearing aids generally do not restore normal hearing.  A new hearing aid user may notice:

  • Snug fit of hearing aid, dome, or earmold in ear with or without itchiness
  • Environmental sound and background noise amplification
  • Echo
  • Own voice loud, nasal or uncomfortable

These issues will most often subside as your ears and brain adjust to amplification.  New users should start wearing hearing aids around the house for a couple of hours each day, gradually increasing the amount of time and background noise present.  Programming adjustments may be necessary.  Generally, full adjustment takes several weeks to months.  Each person adjusts at his/her own pace, which can’t be rushed, to achieve a successful fitting experience.
